Planting Seeds

• The typical depth for just about any seed is 1/2 inch to 1 inch for smaller seeds and 1 inch to1-1/2 inches for larger seeds.
• It depends on what you are planting. Most seed packets give you a recipe for planting depth, seed spacing, germination time, whether to "hill" or "sow" your seeds, thinning heights and spacing and days to maturity.
• Of course this is all variable on the weather and sun and rain and animals. But generally you can expect the seed packet to guide you.  

Most hardy crops need around 45 degrees F for seeding and tender plants such as tomatoes need around 65 degrees F.

• I use the first digit depth of my first finger and draw a line with my finger
• then I place the seeds in the line and cover over the seeds and leave a little mound on top of the seeds till I can label what I just seeded.

One of the better if not best books for detailed planting and planting techniques is The Garden Primer by Barbara Damrosch. (I have her 1st and 2nd editions and I never leave home without it) I use her book religiously and the best cabbage plantings I ever produced was from her guidance on how to hill (co-mingle) the seeds and how and when to separate the seedlings and replant for maturing. Her book can be purchased for around $15.00 and it will be the best $15.00 you ever spent, if you want to be a successful grower.
